The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is located on a 54 acre campus in West Hartford, Connecticut. It is a residential and day program operating as a state-aided private school. It was established in 1817 as the first permanent school for the deaf in America. The current service load is approximately 215. The program is a comprehensive center-based and community-based educational program serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students from preschool through high school, and adult service program, utilizing a total communication philosophy. The American School for the Deaf is accredited by the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs Serving the Deaf and the Departments of Education in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

SCOPE OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Transportation Supervisor, drives school vehicle for the purpose of transporting students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

(a) Check and prepare vehicle for trip readiness (phones, credit cards, etc.)

(b) Safely drive students to and from home to school.

(c) Complete end of trip report.

(d) Participate in training as required by school.

(e) Communicate with students, staff, and parents as appropriate.

(f) Vehicle maintenance such as cleaning, transporting to service centers and/or state inspections.

(g) Other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

State of Connecticut Driver’s License. CDL-C Commercial License with “V” Endorsement for Student Transportation Vehicles. Ability to load and unload luggage from roof top carrier. Excellent driving record. Willingness to drive to New York City. Flexible hours (i.e. nights and weekends to fit the transportation needs of the school including evening field trips, sports away games- usually from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm, quarterly tournaments occasionally out-of-state requiring overnight stay, unscheduled or last minute appointments etc.). Sign Language Skills preferred.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Hourly salary rate based on school salary scale.
